A little planning will help you make the most of your visit.

  • Book accommodation as early as possible

  • Book tickets for any events or experiences you want to attend

  • Plan how you'll travel to and from the city

  • Decide where you'll watch the fireworks

  • Check opening hours if you're visiting attractions before or after New Year's Eve

  • Pack for all types of weather, including sunscreen, a hat, jacket and plenty of water

Getting around

Public transport is the easiest and most convenient way to travel during Sydney New Year's Eve.

Sydney's trains, metro, buses, ferries and light rail make it easy to get around the city and surrounding areas. Due to road closures, changed traffic conditions and limited parking, we don’t recommend driving on New Year's Eve.

Arriving in Sydney

Sydney Airport is located around 20 minutes from the city centre by train, with regular services connecting directly to Circular Quay, Town Hall, Central and other key stations. Taxis, rideshare services and airport shuttle options are also available.

Using public transport

You can travel on Sydney's public transport using an Opal card or simply tap on and tap off with a contactless credit or debit card, smartphone or smartwatch.

Services run to special event timetables on New Year's Eve. Some stations, wharves and bus stops may experience high demand before and after the fireworks. Plan your trip, allow extra travel time and follow directions from transport staff on the day.

Accessibility

Sydney's public transport network includes accessible trains, metro services, buses, ferries and light rail. Accessible routes and event information are available to help you plan their journey, with staff on hand across the city to provide help.

Before you travel

  • Plan your journey and return home.

  • Check transport service updates and road closures.

  • Allow extra travel time, particularly after the fireworks.

  • Wear comfortable shoes if you're walking between points.
